NGC-certified Double Eagles to Realize Six Figures in Heritage Sale

Four Double Eagles certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are among the leading lots in the Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions. Bidding for each had surpassed $100,000 well before the sale, which is being held October 6-9, 2022, and includes over 600 other NGC-certified rarities.

Leading the NGC-certified offerings is an 1870-CC Double Eagle graded NGC AU 50 (lot 3312). This Carson City issue is one of the key dates in the Liberty Double Eagle series. Out of the 46 listed in the NGC Census, there are only four examples graded higher than this one.

Another Liberty Double Eagle making a splash in the auction is an 1866 pedigreed to the Trompeter Collection. Graded NGC PF 65 Cameo, this coin (lot 3373) is one of only 10 examples recorded in the NGC Census.

Meanwhile, the sale also features an 1857-S Double Eagle that was recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. The coin was discovered in a box containing $20 gold coins — well-preserved throughout 130 years lost on the seafloor. Graded NGC MS 67 PL, the rarity (lot 3300) is part of the Song Family Collection, an assortment of beautifully preserved pieces.

Finally, an 1887 Double Eagle graded NGC PF 67+★ Cameo (lot 3374) sits alone atop the nine examples in the NGC Census. Pedigreed to the Miller Collection, this coin also earned the NGC Star (★) Designation for exceptional eye appeal, highly desired by collectors.

In addition to great gold rarities like these, coins from Massachusetts’ colonial period that are pedigreed to the exquisite Christopher J. Salmon Collection are also being featured. These include a Massachusetts (1652) 'NE' Shilling graded NGC XF 45 (lot 3419) and another graded NGC VF 35 (lot 3418). Each had attracted bids over $50,000 by late September.
