Heritage Offering NGC-certified Double Eagles from Shipwreck

Heritage Auctions has been offering some of the most desirable and beautifully preserved coins from the Song Family Collection. While some exquisite pieces have already been sold, an 1857-S Double Eagle from the famous S.S. Central America shipwreck is the in the spotlight in the October 6-10 Long Beach Signature Auction.
Just before the sale, bidding for the 1857-S Double Eagle graded NGC MS 67 PL (lot 3300) has already surpassed $120,000. This coin was discovered in a box containing $20 gold coins — well-preserved while lost on the seafloor for 130 years.
Another 1857-S Double Eagle will be appearing at auction at the 2023 FUN Show. Graded NGC MS 67+, this particular example is unsurpassed among more than 1,600 listed in the NGC Census. Based on previous results, this coin is also likely to realize six figures.
In August, Heritage Auctions offered an 1857-S Double Eagle graded NGC MS 67★ that realized an outstanding $198,000. This particular example is surpassed by only two others in the NGC Census and is the highest grade to also have earned the NGC Star (★) Designation for exceptional eye appeal, highly desired by collectors.
