NGC to Grade/Encapsulate Colonials

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation is now certifying American colonial and confederation coins. This service goes into effect immediately.

The many interesting and historic coins and tokens that preceded the establishment of the U. S. Mint in 1792 have long been the backbone of American numismatics. From the Sommer Islands coins c.1616 through the various colonial and state issues of the Revolutionary era and the many George Washington pieces that followed, NGC will be accepting all items found in the pre-federal chapters of R. S. Yeoman’s A Guide Book of United States Coins.

NGC will both grade and encapsulate colonial and confederation coins, a service that has long been requested by its customers. In keeping with its role as the leader in numismatic professionalism, NGC will go a step further by listing on the label the weight of the coin for types where this is essential, such as Massachusetts silver pieces. This information is crucial to researchers of these early coins.

Some of the more popular types now eligible for certification by NGC include the coins of Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts. Other popular issues that are covered under this new service are the Hibernia and Rosa Americana coinage, the Fugio cents and Confederatio coppers.

To launch its new service NGC has already received two extraordinary examples of America’s early coinage from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The first is a superb gem specimen of the historic Oak Tree shilling, Noe variety 5. This stunning coin, which NGC graded MS 66, traces its pedigree to the Chapman Brothers very first auction, held October 9, 1879. Appearing as Lot 520, it was featured prominently on Plate 1. A second colonial prize encapsulated by NGC is a Pine Tree shilling, N-1. Graded no less than MS 67 by NGC, this wonderful coin is almost certainly the finest known of its type.

Colonial and confederation coins may be submitted under the usual NGC grading tiers, with a minimum tier of EarlyBird service ($28 per coin). No extra fee is required to receive variety attribution of these coins, as this service is included for all colonial/confederation coins.
