Five NGC-graded Chinese Coins Sell for Over $300,000 in Stack's Bowers Auction

A rare Bamboo Dollar was among the stellar offerings in the Hong Kong sale.

Five rare Chinese coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) sold for more than $300,000 each in a Stack’s Bowers auction. The May 2022 Hong Kong Auction’s Session C - Rarities Night concluded on May 4, 2022.

The top lot was a China 1949 Bamboo Dollar graded NGC XF 40 (lot 51083), which realized $480,000. The obverse of the coin features a detailed Chinese pavilion, and the reverse displays stylized stalks of bamboo.

Another top lot was a China 1927 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 63 (lot 51206), which realized $408,000. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, the first provisional president of the Republic of China in 1912. The building on the reverse gives rise to this coin’s nickname: the Mausoleum Dollar.

Also shining brightly at the auction was a China 1923 Gold Presentation Dollar graded NGC MS 63+ (lot 51195), which realized $384,000. The obverse displays a portrait of Tsao Kun, a Chinese warlord and politician who was president of the Republic of China from 1923 to 1924.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • a China 1914 L. Giorgi Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 61 and pedigreed to the Richard Wright Collection (lot 51154), which realized $312,000
  • a China 1916 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 63 and pedigreed to the Chen and Ultima Collections (lot 51177), which realized $312,000
  • a China AH1352 (1933) Sinkiang Silver Mace graded NGC MS 63 (lot 51089), which realized $276,000
  • a China 1910 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 63 (lot 51131), which realized $180,000
  • a China 1904 Tael graded NGC AU 58 (lot 51031), which realized $162,000
  • a China 1912 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 66 and pedigreed to the H.F. Bowker East Asia Collection (lot 51150), which realized $126,000
  • a China (1922) Hunan Dollar graded NGC MS 65 (lot 51026), which realized $120,000
  • a China 1912 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 51149), which realized $120,000
  • a China 1921 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 51186), which realized $120,000
  • a China (1914) 50 Cents graded NGC SP 64+ (lot 51158), which realized $108,000
