Ron Harrigal to Sign NGC Certification Labels Under Exclusive Agreement

Posted on 8/25/2022

The retired US Mint Director of Design and Engraving had an instrumental level of technical oversight during his tenure.

Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) is excited to announce that Ron Harrigal has agreed to individually sign NGC certification labels under an exclusive agreement. For over 35 years, Harrigal applied his technical expertise to innovations involving the structural integrity of coins, which ultimately led to him serving as the US Mint Director of Design and Engraving from 2015 until his retirement in 2021.

After earning his Mechanical Engineering degree from West Virginia University, Harrigal started his numismatic career at the US Mint Headquarters in 1985. He joined a newly formed engineering team, where his career would take off with innovations involving coin quality and production efficiency.

Among his contributions, Harrigal worked on modern edge lettering, which is currently used on Sacagawea and American Innovation Dollars; planchet specifications for many coin programs, including the American Gold Buffalo and American Palladium Eagle coins; and alloy, dimensions and die specifications for large format coins. He provided design specifications for dies to create the first US-produced concave coins and managed the redesign of the American Silver and Gold Eagle coins in 2021.

Additionally, Harrigal oversaw the first laser frosting application on a US Mint product and the implementation of the privy marks found on 2021 Morgan Dollars.

When he retired from the US Mint, Harrigal left a legacy of innovative techniques integral to many of the coins that collectors cherish today. He has partnered with NGC to hand-sign certification labels for coins attributed to his impressive work.

“NGC has an excellent reputation for authenticating, grading and encapsulating coins,” says Ron Harrigal. “I am excited to work with NGC as they help protect the legacy of modern US coinage, which is appreciated by many collectors.”

“Ron Harrigal has been instrumental in the innovation of US coins,” says Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman. “We are thrilled to have him join our NGC Signature Series roster of talented individuals who have contributed to numismatics.”

Coins certified with the NGC Ron Harrigal Signature Label will be available through LCR Coin. To learn more about the NGC Authentic Hand-Signed Labels program and its many significant signers, click here.
