NGC-certified Coin from Famous Shipwreck Offered in MDC Monaco Auction

An array of NGC-graded ancient and world coins are featured in the June event.

An array of rare ancient and world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®), including a coin salvaged from a shipwreck off the Florida coast, are being offered in an upcoming auction. Online bidding is currently underway for Monnaies de Collection Monaco’s Auction No. 9, with sessions concluding June 3-4, 2022.

The top NGC-certified lot is a gold coin recovered from the wreckage of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet that sank off the coast of Florida during a hurricane. The Mexico 1715MO J “Royal” 8 Escudos is graded NGC MS 62 with large Rosettes on Reverse and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 1110).

Intended for important dignitaries, Royal coinage was struck on special planchets that are markedly different that the crude cobs typical of Spanish colonial mints of this era. Only a few dozen examples of Royal 8 Escudos from all dates are known. This one has a starting price of €250,000 (about $260,000).

Another top NGC-graded lot is a coin that depicts a young Queen Victoria and is regarded by many as the most beautiful in British numismatics. The Great Britain 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign is graded NGC PF 62 Ultra Cameo (lot 927) and has a starting price of €150,000 (about $156,000).

Also featured in the sale is a Romanian coin featuring a portrait of King Carol II, who reigned from 1930 until his forced abdication in 1940 during World War II. The Romania 1939 100 Lei is graded NGC MS 64 (lot 1152), with a starting price of €150,000 (about $156,000).

  • an England 1701 5 Guineas Plain Scepters graded NGC MS 62+ (lot 916), with a starting price of €120,000 (about $125,000)
  • a Vietnam (1848-83) Annam Gold Lang graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1265), with a starting price of €120,000 (about $125,000)
  • a Roman Empire Vitellius AD 69 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients MS★, 4/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface (lot 114), with a starting price of €100,000 (about $104,000)
  • a Germany 1813C Westphalia 40 Franks graded NGC AU 55 (lot 230), with a starting price of €100,000 (about $104,000)
  • an Austria (1626) Hall 7.5 Ducats graded NGC AU 55 (lot 264), with a starting price of €100,000 (about $104,000)
  • an Italy 1907 Prova Gold 100 Lire graded NGC PF 64 Matte (lot 1093), with a starting price of €100,000 (about $104,000)
  • an England 1699 Elephant and Castle 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 915), with a starting price of €80,000 (about $83,000)
  • a Great Britain 1741/38 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 62 and pedigreed to the Chalaza Collection (lot 921), with a starting price of €80,000 (about $83,000)
  • a Madagascar 1895 Gold Pattern 5 Francs graded NGC PF 62 Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 1105), with a starting price of €80,000 (about $83,000)
  • a Russia 1782-dated Peter I Monument Gold Medal graded NGC UNC Details (lot 1155), with a starting price of €75,000 (about $78,000)
