Description and Analysis
Early Half Dimes
1796/5 LM-2 H10C MS
Description & Analysis
Of the two die marriages known to have been used for 1796 half dimes, this one features an obverse die that was originally dated 1795 and then overpunched with a 6. Coinage of the small denominations was quite sporadic in the 1790s, so it was not unusual for dies to be prepared in advance, only to have no bullion available or no orders pending.
This is the rarer of the two varieties for 1796, and it is evident in NGC's certified population. Bear in mind, however, that a large percentage of the early U. S. coins submitted for grading fail to receive numeric grades, and these Details graded coins are not included in the Census figures.
