Buffalo Five Cents
1916 DOUBLED DIE OBV 5C MS

Description & Analysis

One of the most dramatic and popular varieties of this series is the boldly doubled obverse for 1916. The date, feathers and hair ribbon are all distinctly duplicated. This variety was not reported until the 1960s, and only a handful of Mint State pieces have surfaced since that time. Circulated examples are likewise quite scarce, a few of them being revealed through the use of acid to restore the date on heavily worn nickels. This variety is still identifiable by other doubled features than the date, but such coins are worth much less.
