Description and Analysis

Indian Cents
1886 TYPE 2 1C PF

Description & Analysis

Midway through 1886 Charles Barber relocated the words OF AMERICA to better balance the design, and this is evident by the fact that the last feather of Liberty's headdress now points between letters CA.

Since most proof sets were sold early in the year, the proof edition of this major variety formed a minority of the proof cents sold in 1886. Rick Snow estimated that 1750 of the 4290 proofs were of the second variety.

Type 2 proofs are nearly unknown with cameo contrast, and precious few have survived with full red color. This is one of the condition rarities within the Indian Head proof series.
