Description and Analysis
1898 S 10C MS
Description & Analysis
Most 1898-S dimes were well made, with sharp strikes and good luster, sometimes with prooflike fields. Mint State survivors are very scarce, yet gems comprise a higher than usual percentage of these coins.
XF-AU examples are more often seen than for earlier S-Mint dimes, though most have been cleaned. These were mostly coins that had been shipped to The Philippines following American control of the islands at the end of the Spanish-American War. They circulated for just a few years before being supplanted by a new series of coins unique to The Philippines.
Both RPD and MPD varieties are known for the 1898-S dime, but these have attracted little interest.
