Description and Analysis
Seated Liberty Quarters
1889 25C PF
Description & Analysis
The quality of this issue rose a bit from the proof quarters of 1887-88, though the reverse die reveals some pitting on the devices. Sales continued to slide, while the mintage of currency pieces rose, creating a situation where the proofs carry a slight premium.
A single pair of dies produced this entire issue. Several of the obverse stars are not completely formed on the resulting coins, and this may have been a flaw in the hubbing process. Gems have survived in sufficient numbers to satisfy advanced collectors, while lesser numbers of Cameo and Ultra Cameo coins have also been certified.
