Description and Analysis
2007 P JOHN ADAMS DBL.EDG.LET. - OVERLAPPED $1 MS
Description & Analysis
The John Adams dollar was the second issue of the Presidential Dollar series. The mint clearly knew they wouldn't be as popular as the George Washington dollars, as overall mintages on the MS coins dropped by over 30%.
After the missing edge lettering fiasco with the George Washington dollars, the mint clearly was being very careful in making sure every coin got run through the edge lettering machines. Unfortunately for them, they did their jobs too well, and a large number went through twice, creating a new error for collectors to search for.
In fact, because the direction of the edge letting is random, there were two errors created. Overlapped refers to double edge lettering that is in the same orientation, and inverted refers to coins in which the orientation of the two edge lettering is opposite.
