Description and Analysis
Seated Liberty Half Dollars
1857 50C MS
Description & Analysis
Production of half dollars more than doubled over that of 1856, and this would be the first of two large mintage years for the Philadelphia Mint. This issue is common across all grades short of Mint State. Though not rare in unworn condition, gems are extremely elusive.
Some 14 obverse dies have been identified, and these were paired with a like number of reverses to create 16 known die marriages. Two collars have been observed, these having 145 or 146 reeds, respectively.
Two misplaced date (MPD) varieties are known: WB-102 and WB-103 (VP-001).
