Early US Type Performance
1812/1 LARGE 8 50C MS

Description & Analysis

Two different overdated obverse dies were paired with Reverse A . On O-101, numeral 8 is noticeably larger than on other 1812 half dollar dies. While the overdate feature is not as prominent as on O-102, this variety is fairly rare and highly sought for its distinctive Large 8. It's unlikely that a Mint State example exists, and most survivors are well worn. Collectors are cautioned that this variety is frequently mis-attributed through wishful thinking, and any prospective O-101 or O-101a (with the shattered obverse die) should be professionally authenticated.
