Description and Analysis
1940 D 25C MS
Description & Analysis
The regressive, small mintage of 1940-D quarters is an anomaly that can be explained only by a reserve of 1939-dated pieces still on hand. The saving of BU rolls has made this issue only slightly scarce in comparison to its contemporaries, though pieces were elusive in circulation during the later years of silver coinage. While plentiful in grades through MS 66, this entry is notable for sharp strikes but sometimes disappointing luster.
Several obverse doubled-die varieties are known, but only one of these is appealing enough to attract much attention.
