Description & Analysis
Yet again the Philadelphia Mint produced far more proof coins than could be sold. Just 600 of the 1,000 struck were placed, and the remainder went to the melting pot. This issue is about equal in rarity to that of the previous year, but there appear to be fewer examples that qualify as Cameo proofs.
Larry Briggs identified just a single die pair for this mintage, his variety 7-E. Both feature dies taken from Type 2 hubs, and this would remain true for the remainder of proof production through 1865.
