Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Quarters
1861 S 25C MS

Description & Analysis

This low-mintage issue is one of the real rarities of the Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar series. Most survivors are heavily worn and/or damaged, with even the middle circulated grades being quite elusive. No Mint State pieces are known, and the spike in pieces graded AU by NGC likely represents resubmissions of the same specimen in an attempt to get an MS grade.

Two die pairs have been identified for 1861-S, with none of the four dies being used in more than one combination. The obverses are Type 2, while the reverses are old Type 1 dies leftover from shipments during the 1850s.
