Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Quarters
1860 O 25C MS

Description & Analysis

The mintage of quarter dollars at the New Orleans Mint rose a bit from 1859's total, but this issue is still slightly scarce in circulated grades. Mint State coins and those just shy of that level are elusive, with gems (MS-65 and higher) being very rare.

In his book The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, Larry Briggs identified two die marriages for 1860-O, each consisting of unique obverse and reverse dies. In both instances the obverse die is from the Type 2 hub, while the reverse is from the Type 1 hub. The reverse dies were evidently repolished at some point during production, resulting in die states that display shallow mintmarks. This same phenomenon is noted for 1860-O silver dollars, as well.
