Description and Analysis
Early Half Dimes
1800 H10C MS
Description & Analysis
Three obverse dies were mated with two reverses in various combinations to produce the four known marriages of 1800. These were the first half dimes to feature the handsome Heraldic Eagle reverse, and it is particularly charming on this tiny coin.
A modest number of Mint State pieces have survived, these perhaps saved for the novelty of their reverse type. Striking quality is highly variable for all early half dimes.
Varieties LM-1 and LM-3 are the ones most often seen, while LM-2 and LM-4 are quite rare. LM-3 and -4 share an obverse die having a defective R in LIBERTY that has long been known as the LIBEKTY variety.
