Nickel Three Cents
1879 3CN MS

Description & Analysis

A redundancy of three-cent pieces developed during 1876, and this saw a complete suspension of coinage for circulation during 1877-78. This abated only somewhat in 1879, and the few non-proofs of this date are quite scarce in all grades. Gems exist in a disproportionately high number, yet their rarity is similar to that of other dates from the 1870s.

Most 1879 three-cent pieces were quite well struck from faintly prooflike dies. With such a limited mintage, the dies simply didn't wear enough to show frosty luster.
