Description and Analysis
Lincoln Cents, Wheat Reverse
1951 1C MS
Description & Analysis
Despite a generous mintage and a high survival rate in Mint State due to the saving of original rolls, this issue is rare in MS 67 RD. The culprit seems to be an overall dull color and light staining as the result of the planchet cleaning process.
This issue is nearly devoid of collectable varieties.
From the Mint Director's Report we learn that the cost of coining 1,000 cents had fallen from $1.59 in Fiscal Year 1946 to just $1.21 in FY1951, this despite an increase in Mint salaries averaging 73% due to postwar inflation.
