Description & Analysis
1908 was another date with fairly low proof sales, and the U. S. Mint no longer retained unsold pieces that it sold to dealers at the end of the year. This practice common during the 1880s has made those proofs more available in red gem than these later dates.
Guide Book author Rick Snow observed that the die-polishing lines which are such a distraction on 1901-07 proof cents are not seen on the proofs of this and the following year.
