Indian Cents

Description & Analysis

This issue in proof is one of the great rarities in American numismatics. Only a few pieces were coined in 1864, and these may have been intended as patterns. When collectors learned of the existence of proof 1864 L cents, the demand was so great that the Mint coined a few more around 1869. The figures given in Rick Snow's Guide Book on this series are nine originals and 11 restrikes, and this seems correct given the number known today. Three die pairs are known for these proofs, a remarkable fact in consideration of the small number coined.
