Description & Analysis
The production of cents rose only modestely from 1867, and 1868 is another date that is scarce within the overall Indian Head series. It's interesting to note, however, that what seems like a small mintage in 1868 would have been considered quite high for the pre-war era of large cents. As American industry created more jobs and mass production lowered prices, the demand for cents was much higher overall.
Mint State examples of this date are elusive, especially with significant amounts of red color. Circulated pieces are fairly scarce in the higher grades, but worn examples exist in sufficient numbers to fill albums.
This date is another one notable for die-punching varieties, and the most popular of these are listed at left.
