Description and Analysis
Coronet Head Cents
1839 BOOBY HEAD 1C MS
Description & Analysis
The whimsical name Booby Head was applied to cents of this bust type during the 1850s or '60s, when collecting the disappearing large cents first became popular. It is easily recognized by Liberty's exposed shoulder. This is the most plentiful subtype of 1839 cents, encompassing nine die marriages.
Common varieties for this bust include N-6 (photos), -7, -9, -11 and -13. In contrast, N-5, -10, -12 and -14 are scarce. N-15, unknown during Newcomb's lifetime, is genuinely rare.
