Description and Analysis

Coronet Head Cents
1834 1C MS

Description & Analysis

While only seven die marriages are known for 1834 cents, these encompass several distinctive combinations of obverse and reverse features. The sizes of numeral 8, the stars and the reverse letters all vary, and this makes for a very interesting date.

N-6 is the only variety bearing the Large Letters last seen on cents dated 1832 (N-7 also has LL, but this is a proof-only issue). While N-6 is indeed scarce, the only rarity of this date among currency pieces is N-5, which combines a Large 8 with Large Stars and Medium Letters.

Examples grading MS BN are common enough to be collectable, with N-1 through N-4 being the most available varieties (N-4 is illustrated).
