Description & Analysis

The 1964-D has a spectacularly huge mintage, because silver speculators shrewdly removed the pieces from circulation as soon as they were issued. Vast quantities of rolls were melted circa 1980, or were indifferently stored in bags, and high grade survivors are surprisingly rare.

6/1/2005 — A growing area of interest among variety specialists is the U.S. Mint's striking of coins for circulation from dies that were intended solely for proof coins. By this I don't mean dies that are brilliantly polished in anticipation of coining proofs.
