Description & Analysis

With the economy on the mend, Philadelphia turned out far more quarter dollars this year than in 1958. Nevertheless, the trend was clearly toward Denver striking greater numbers annually. This makes sense, since it had taken on additional service territory when the San Francisco Mint stopped producing coins in 1955.

This issue is plentiful through MS 66, but the number of coins certified as MS 67 is far below those of surrounding years. Such pieces are scarce and highly sought. As is true of all Philadelphia Mint quarters 1956-64, examples are known struck from retired or unneeded proof dies. These feature the distinctive Type B reverse and may appear semi-prooflike.
