Description & Analysis

The reduced mintage of quarter dollars in 1955 led to much higher production this year. The saving of BU rolls increased throughout the 1950s, as speculative trading rolls became a major element in the coin market. Common through MS 67, 1956(P) quarters offer little challenge to collectors.

Varieties are surprisingly few, though a new development in 1956 did result in one that's highly sought. Starting this year, the Philadelphia Mint began to use retired proof dies to strike coins for general circulation. When no longer needed or no longer fit for proofs, these were pressed into regular production to help cope with steadily rising mintages. The reverse dies used for proof quarter dollars were taken from a different hub than that used for currency dies, so these "Type B Reverse" dies are easily spotted by their distinctive separation between letters ES of STATES. Currency strikes from these dies are sometimes faintly prooflike, but the dies were used long enough for them to lose their original polish.
