Description & Analysis

In 1919, the United States was just emerging from the first World War. This caused a slowdown in the markets, which meant fewer coins were needed. Therefore, mintages of circulating coinage fell precipitously in 1919 across all three mints.

Only 1.1 million coins were struck at the mint in Denver in 1919. This low mintage, plus the major slowdown in the economy meant that the few coins that were struck went straight into circulation and were not saved in any large numbers. This makes the 1919-D Walker among the rarest in the series in high grade. In fact, NGC has only graded a mere four coins in gem, with none higher! (8/2016)
