Description & Analysis

In 1917, the U.S. Mint decided to move the mint mark on the Walking Liberty half dollar from the obverse to the reverse. This change was requested by the Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken as he personally didn't like the mint mark on the front of the coin. This created two varieties struck in 1917 from the Denver and San Francisco Mints. In both cases, the obverse variety is the rarer of the two.

In fact, in San Francisco, the mint struck only 952,000 coins with the obverse mint mark versus over 5.5 million with the reverse. Because of this, the obverse mint mark variety is usually worth more than the reverse. However, both types suffer from weak strikes, which severely limit the grades. Both are quite rare in gem, and nearly impossible to find above gem.
