Description & Analysis

The San Francisco Mint began Trade Dollar production in July 1873, and a respectable total of 703,000 coins were produced by the end of that year. As one would expect for an S-mint issue in this series, the 1873-S was widely exported, many of the coins being subsequently melted in China or India. Nevertheless, enough circulated coins are extant to supply most collectors with a decent VF, XF, or AU representative for their date or first-year type sets. Uncirculated examples are however, rare, and this issue may very well be the most difficult S-mint Trade Dollar to locate in Mint State.
