Description & Analysis

By 1924 it had become plainly evident to the U. S. Mint that the current type of quarter dollar was becoming dateless after just a few years' circulation, and the problem had to be addressed in some substantial manner. The dates for 1923 and 1924 had been sharpened as a stop-gap measure, but the real solution was applied with 1925's master die. The raised step upon which Liberty stands was ground down to form a deep recess, and the 1925 date was cut into the master die in a Roman font which replaced the sans-serif font used previously. The numerals were somewhat compressed vertically to make them fit entirely within the recess, and in this form the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar was produced through 1930. The quarters of 1925-30 were extremely resistant to date loss, this design feature surviving at least in part no matter how worn the coins became overall.

With more than 12 million pieces coined, all of them at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1925 edition is common in grades through Very Fine. Mint State examples are plentiful through MS 65, though relatively few are fully struck at Liberty's head. There are a lot of near misses, and this may have led to multiple resubmissions in an attempt to get the desired designation. Jay Cline questioned the high certified population of MS FH coins shown by the major grading services, and he placed the estimated percentage of FH coins at just 5% of outstanding MS pieces.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction. As such, NGC disclaims all warranties, express or implied, with respect to the information contained in the NGC Guides. By using the NGC Guides, the user agrees that neither NGC nor any of its affiliates, shareholders, officers, employees or agents shall have any liability for any loss or damage of any kind, including without limitation any loss arising from reliance on the information contained in the Guides.
