Description & Analysis

The post-war economic recession of 1921-22 curtailed the production of most USA coin issues, the sole exceptions being silver dollars and double eagles, both of which were coined for reasons other than domestic circulation. The only quarter dollars struck in 1921 were from the Philadelphia Mint, which produced just under two million pieces.

The reduction in the number of working dies needed for 1921 gave the Mint's Engraving Department an opportunity to do some touching up to the master matrices for each coin type. The changes to the quarter dollar were quite subtle, but they resulted in a number of truly outstanding strikes that have full or nearly full features. The number of Mint State survivors is perhaps greater than one would expect for a relatively small issue, but most fall short of qualifying for a Full Head designation. An odd quality of 1921 quarters is that many are a bit shallow at the bottom of the date, whereas it is the top of the date that doesn't strike up fully on other issues.

Worn pieces are quite scarce and in great demand from collectors. As with so many 1917-24 quarters, these often are identifiable solely from the final numeral of the date, which was the last to succumb to wear.
