Description & Analysis

The deficiency of the obverse master hub used for 1916 Standing Liberty Quarters was already apparent to the Mint's Engraving Department when that issue was struck December 16. A new hub would not be ready in time to generate working dies with the date 1916, but these were indeed ready at the very beginning of the new year. The details of the obverse were vastly improved, resulting in a coin that was quite pleasing to the eye. That is, of course, unless you were artist Hermon MacNeil, who was shocked upon receiving his first samples January 10. The obverse resembled his early model from the spring of 1916, while the reverse was entirely alien in layout to him. His complaints about the finished coins, whether dated 1916 or 1917, were so compelling that the Mint elected to rework it extensively in the coming months.

In the meantime, millions of the 1917 Type 1 quarter dollars were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, and it was this date that the general public saved in large numbers for its novelty and beauty. The Mint's improvements to the obverse hub resulted in very sharply impressed details, and the majority of 1917(P) Type 1 quarters (series expert J. H. Cline specified "80%") displayed a full head to the Liberty figure when unworn. Since this design feature would be poorly wrought on most of the Type 2 issues of 1917-30, it has become a grading factor for the series as a whole. On this particular issue, however, it is more often seen than not.

Gems are plentiful, both with and without the FH (Full Head) designation. A fair number of truly exceptional survivors have been certified, and there is no reason for a collector to compromise on quality. Worn examples are likewise plentiful, though a large percentage succumbed to the loss of their dates due to it being one of the highest features of the design. Unprotected by the raised rim, the dates of all Standing Liberty Quarters through 1924 wore off very easily in circulation. A survery of circulation finds conducted in 1938 revealed a very large percentage of dateless SLQs just a dozen years after their debut. Since this particular date is one of only two to carry its distinctive subtype, dateless Type 1 quarters of the Philadelphia Mint may be presumed to be formerly dated 1917, unless they display the several clues that reveal them to have been dated 1916.
