The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The tragic bloodletting of the Civil War sparked a religious revival in the United States that would affect the Seated Quarter series only one year after Appomattox Courthouse. The Act of March 3, 1865 mandated the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to all silver and gold coins of sufficient size. The scroll upon which the motto resides was added to the reverse of the Seated Quarter by James Barton Longacre, the first coins displaying this feature being delivered in 1866. Only 725 proof 1866 Motto quarters were minted.
