Description & Analysis

The Carson City Mint reached its peak of production for quarter dollars this year, a more than 30-fold increase over 1875. The vast majority of these coins were shipped east to assist in the redemption of millions of fractional currency notes that had been issued since 1862. With silver achieving value parity against paper money, the coins were now free to circulate, and the hated notes were no longer needed.

1876-CC quarters are plentiful across most grades, with only XF and better pieces being somewhat scarce. Mint State coins, even gems, are available to meet the desires of advanced collectors. Their quality of strike is variable, so buyers are urged to shop with some discrimination.

Such a large productions required dozens of dies, and this issue is thus rich in varieties. Most feature the Type 2 reverse, but Type 1 issues are not rare. Though Walter Breen listed a Tall CC variety, Larry Briggs cataloged several dies having either the Small CC of 1870-75 or the Large CC of 1876-78. The latter is typically described as Medium CC by half dollar collectors, since a yet larger size is known for that series, so the terminology may be confusing at first. Further adding to complexity of 1876-CC quarters is that three different reeding gauges were employed: 113 reeds, 122 and 153. The last is known as Fine Reeding and was once thought to be rare. Though highly distinctive, it is actually the most common gauge for 1876-CC and brings no premium.
