Description & Analysis

Passed January 14, 1875, the Specie Resumption Act called for the replacement of the fractional paper notes in use since 1862 with silver dimes, quarters and halves. The notes were to be redeemed at par, as the price of silver had fallen enough in the past few years that these coins no longer traded at a premium to paper. With millions of dollars of fractional notes outstanding, this redemption resulted in a huge upswing in the numbers of fractional silver pieces being coined. Thus, the mintage 1875(P) quarter dollars was nearly ten times that of the previous date.

This issue is common in lower grades, with better circulated pieces being just slightly scarce. Mint State examples are plentiful, and gems are available in sufficient number to satisfy advanced collectors of this series. Most seen are well struck, too.

Many dies were required for such a large production, and the reverse dies were created from either one of two hubs. The older one, in use since 1866, has broad bases to the letters TAT in STATES that nearly touch one another. The new hub, which debuted this year, has shorter bases to those letters, which are distinctly separated. In his book The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, Larry Briggs observed that there is no difference in rarity between these reverse styles for 1875(P). The only variety of interest is one having the tops of duplicate numerals 87 within the denticles below the date.
