Description & Analysis

This is a P-mint that was not given much respect (to quote the late Rodney Dangerfield) by Messrs. Wiley and Bugert. In their 1993 reference on the series, they had this to say about the 1844: 'Similar in scarcity to the 1844-O in circulated grades but more common in mint state as are most P-mints when compared to branch mints of the same date.' In our experience, the 1844 is a seldom-seen coin in MS64 condition, even though the Mint cranked out 1.7 million pieces.
