Description & Analysis

To celebrate the new millennium as well as the issuance of the new Sacagawea dollars, General Mills and the United States Mint ran a special promotion with the Cheerios brand. Every box of the cereal sold in January of 2000 would contain a brand-new 2000 Lincoln cent. Additionally, approximately one in 1800 boxes would also have an as-of-then unreleased 2000 Sacagawea dollar inside as well. A total of 5,500 of the new dollars would be released in this manner.

It wasn't until a full five years later, in February of 2005, that a surprising discovery was made. Many of the coins that the mint provided to General Mills for the promotion in late 1999 were struck using a prototype reverse die. This die featured enhanced wing and tail feather detail.

Obviously, many of those 5,500 coins from the promotion were lost or spent, making them even harder to come by. Additionally, it is now apparent that not every coin in the promotion had this prototype reverse. NGC denotes coins that are submitted in the sealed Cheerios package as "Prototype Reverse" only if the coin is found to have the enhanced feather reverse. Otherwise, it will be described simply as "Cheerios Promotion."
