Description & Analysis

African-Americans fought on both sides of the American War for Independence, also known as the American Revolution. To honor those who served the cause of American Liberty, in 1996 Congress authorized the minting of up to 500,000 silver dollars depicting this theme. Included in the sales price was a surcharge of $10 that went toward endowment of the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial in Washington, DC.

The memorial was approved by Congress in 1986 as one of the last such structures permitted on the Washington Mall to avoid cluttering this beautiful space. The final design was selected ten years later, at the same time as the commemorative coin was authorized to help in funding its construction. Sadly, the balance of required money has not been obtained. As of this writing, the memorial remains just a vision.

The coins, however, are quite tangible, and they serve as a reminder of an unfulfilled dream. The obverse of this type was designed and sculpted by John Mercanti of the U. S. Mint. It features a facing portrait of Crispus Attucks, the first American to die in the cause of Liberty. He was a victim of the so-called “Boston Massacre” of 1770, in which British troops stationed in that city fired into a restless gathering of local civilians. Attucks was the first to fall, and 1998 marked the 275th anniversary of his birth. His name and lifespan are inscribed to the right of his portrait, with the coin’s mintmark below. The date of coining is placed beneath Attucks’ portrait, and Mercanti’s initials appear on the patriot’s right sleeve. Statutory mottoes balance the devices and complete this side.

The reverse of this coin was designed by artist Ed Dwight, but it is the initials of U. S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. that appear just inside the border at four o’clock. This side features a view of the proposed memorial. It depicts five African-American figures in dress of the Revolutionary period and represents the variety of military and civilian patriots who contributed to the cause of Liberty. The remaining statutory legends complete this side, which is very appealing in its simplicity.

Offered for sale from February 13 through December 31 of 1998, both the uncirculated and proof coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. Though poor sales were the norm for U. S. Mint commemorative coins around this time, the showing for this entry was particularly disappointing. Proof sales were just double those of the uncirculated edition, with both falling far short of expectations. Those who did purchase these coins from the Mint were rewarded with very scarce items which are now in much higher demand than they were at the time.
