Description & Analysis

The 1916-S Mercury Dime is fairly common in circulated grades through Very Fine, with XF and AU examples being more elusive. Mint State coins are plentiful, but these typically are weak in the central portion of Liberty's curls and on the central horizontal bands and the lower diagonal band of the fasces. On the plus side, 1916-S dimes usually have excellent luster.

The S mintmark used for this issue is the same punch introduced with the Lincoln Cents of 1909 and used until early 1917. The first batch of reverse dies sent to the San Francisco Mint had this S tucked up very high against the olive branch. Some of these dies were used for the early coinage of 1917, too.

A very minor S over S variety is known, but this has attracted no interest from general collectors of the Mercury series.
