The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1884 proof quarter eagle is similar to the quarter and half dollar of this date in that each has a low production of business strikes as well as proof strikings. Also, in each case first-strike circulation coins have been confused with actual proofs in the past. Only 73 proof two and a halves were struck, and it is estimated that today no more than 30 to 40 pieces are known in all grades.
