Description & Analysis

All 1796-dated half cents are presumed to have comprised the October 1796 delivery of 1,390 pieces. This is the rarest date among early half cents and the key to this series.

Two die marriages are known from two obverses and a shared reverse. The rarer of the two varieties is the No Pole half cent on which the pole supporting Liberty's cap is not visible. Unlike the similar 1795 variety, where the pole was polished off of the die, it appears that the engraver simply omitted this feature on the 1796 die. This obverse is always seen with a bisecting die crack, and such an obvious die failure is what likely led to early retirement of this die and the rarity of this marriage.
