Description & Analysis

This first variety of the short-lived Chain Cent features an abbreviation of AMERI., perhaps because the engraver didn't space his lettering correctly and just ran out of room. It is popularly collected as a major variety separate of the three die marriages having AMERICA spelled in full.

Even when heavily worn, the S-1 marriage is distinguishable by the fact that the junction of the chain links is centered directly above letter N in ONE. On the AMERICA coins, the junction is offset to the left.

Examples of this variety are quite rare and desirable. Different sources place the number coined at either 2,900 or 7,000.
