Description & Analysis

There is just a single die pair known for this final year of the Capped Bust Quarter Dollar, yet its large mintage would suggest the use of additional dies. Since most examples show signs of extended die erosion and indifferent striking, perhaps the Mint simply got lucky in that these dies lasted so long. The transition to the new Seated Liberty type occurred in September.

This date is common in overall numbers, and a fair number of Mint State examples have survived. While many collectors favor the 1838 quarter as their one type coin for its transitional date status, buyers are cautioned to seek out examples from the early die state in which details remained sharp.
