Description & Analysis

The 1823/2 quarter dollar is the first rare date since 1804, and fewer than three dozen are known across all grades. A single warrant dated February 3 included the 1,800 pieces produced for 1823. An additional warrant dated December 31, 1823 for 16,000 quarter dollars is believed by many researchers to have comprised coins dated 1824, yet reference books often include it in the mintage for 1823/2 quarters.

NGC has certified very few examples, though one Mint State specimen is notable.

The abortive coinage of 1822 left several obverse dies on hand, and one of these was overpunched with a numeral 3, the engraver making no attempt to remove the original digit. This obverse was paired with a single reverse die that went on to strike coins dated 1824, 1825 and 1828.
