Description & Analysis

The somewhat abortive production of half dollars dated 1796-97 condemned the Draped Bust/Small Eagle type to become a relatively rare coin type. No more half dollars were coined until 1801, by which time the Heraldic Eagle first used in 1796 had been adapted to the dollar, dime and half dime. Its debut on the half dollar occurred this year, when 30,289 examples were coined from two die marriages. Obverse 1 was paired with two reverse dies. Overton-1 is the more common variety, but neither is a rarity is circulated grades.

The mintage of 1801 half dollars is comprised of three delivery warrants dated August 14, December 1 and December 26. The Overton and Tompkins books list the two die marriages in opposite orders, so it's difficult to assign the production of either variety to a particular warrant.
