Description & Analysis

The low mintage for 1801 may be explained by the rising price of silver at the time. Each dollar coin then contained about $1.03 in silver, so there was little incentive on the part of depositors to render bullion into pieces legally worth less than their market value. Those dollars that were produced became subject to exportation for their bullion value. This prompted a reduction in dollar coinage and a resumption in half dollar production. Though the value of the half dollar was in proportion to that of the dollar, it seemed less subject to exportation and became the staple silver denomination for decades afterward.

The four die marriages of 1801 were the product of combining two obverses and four reverses. A study of die states with later date pieces reveals that marriages BB-212 and BB-214 were not coined before 1802. Whether any of the silver dollars produced during 1801 bore dates earlier than that year is uncertain, but such practice was quite common at the U. S. Mint until the mid-1830s. None of the 1801 marriages are rare, but BB-213 and BB-214 are a bit more scarce than the other two.

Mint State survivors are rare, and most examples seen grade from F to VF. The dollars of 1801-03 seem to be more often well struck and the dies less worn than for earlier dates. It's likely than the lowered demand for dollar coinage enabled the mint to be more diligent in replacing unsuitable dies.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
