Description & Analysis

This is a fairly scarce issue, a fact not properly reflected in market values, since most collectors are seeking any coin of the Small Eagle type regardless of date. Of the more than 300,000 silver dollars coined during calendar year 1798, only a small percentage of these bore the Small Eagle reverse. In his book on early dollars, Q. David Bowers estimated that nearly half of that year's mintage was comprised of coins dated 1795-97. He provided an estimate of just 35,000 for the 1798 Small Eagle type.

The two die marriages known for the 1798 SE dollar each used unique obverse and reverse dies. One obverse displays 15 stars, suggesting that it was made prior to the admission of Tennessee as the 16th state on June 1, 1796 (It was a common practice at the U. S. Mint to complete obverse dies with all features save for the date, since it was not known when the dies actually would be needed). The second obverse features 13 stars, the standard to which the Mint reverted when it became evident that it would not be able to keep up with the still-growing Union of states. The 15-star obverse was almost certainly coined first, as it was paired with a reverse die that had been used previously for dollars dates 1795, 1796 and 1797! The 13-star obverse was mated to the reverse die used for 1797 BB-73. Neither marriage is considered rare, at least within the context of the overall scarcity of the 1798 Small Eagle dollars as a type.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
